Chapter 31: "Soccer ball balloon"

Don't answer this question set until after you've read Chapter Thirty-One. Spoilers ahead!

Also: don't answer it if you're read past Chapter Thirty-One and have more information about what happens.

After Frankie encounters Rye's wife at the hospital, Frankie claims "The only person [Frankie] hated more than Rye was herself" (406).

Do the events revealed in this chapter make Rye an unredeemable character? Is there a world in which his decisions are defensible?

Should Frankie tell Rye's wife, Missy, what she knows about Rye?

Question 1 and 2 I try not to say that people are irredeemable, but unless he actually makes an effort to be better then he just won't be better.

Question 3 I also believe that Frankie owes it to Missy to be honest to her about everything. Being cheated on by a spouse is a painful betrayal, but she also has kids. Rye cheating is also him betraying their children too. Since Frankie was the other woman and knew about Missy, she owes her the truth. That's just how I feel about it.

  2. In my opinion, Rye is not an unredeemable character. Though his actions are completely wrong, he is not placed as unredeemable because he is able to recognize he is at fault for his actions and change his actions in the future as a result. However, Rye must put effort into changing for good.

Additionally, I do not believe there is a world in which his actions are defensible. Marriage unites two people together. Through his actions, Rye has broken this bond and cheated on Missy. Rye made the decision to tear his family apart; therefore, I do not believe Rye’s decisions are defensible.

Finally, I do believe Frankie should tell Missy about Rye’s actions because she deserves to know of his betrayal. Frankie is not at fault, she was not aware of Rye’s home life. So, I believe Frankie should tell Missy because she has the right to know about the unfaithfulness of her husband.

  3. Personally, for me this form of lying is one that would make me never look at someone the same. I don’t think that his actions are defensible, but I don’t think that it would be up to me to forgive him or not. In 2024 the lead singer of Foo Fighters(Dave Grohl) admitted to cheating on his wife and I have never really listened to his music the same way. I also have personally had a situation that involved cheating, and I beat myself up for it for a long time. In said situation it had been attempted to defend said actions. I had none of it, and honestly I still don’t forgive her. That being said, now I realize I am beyond glad I was told it happened/was happening. It made it a lot easier to move on. I think that Frankie should definitely tell Missy about what she knows about Rye. It almost feels like a common courtesy to tell her what’s happening. That way she can move on like I did. As for the question if Rye is an unredeemable character, that’s tough. It’s tough because like I said it’s not up to me to forgive him or not. I personally wouldn’t, and I would even look at him in a similar light like Foo Fighters. It would be an off taste in my mouth about him, and it wouldn’t go away. I don’t know if I would ever be able to look at him the same way if I was Milly.
