188. Who's there?

"Wind from the Sea" (1948) by Andrew Wyeth

What do you think about the authors “knock-knock” (188) dream and the story it tells?

  1. I think the author’s “knock-knock” dream tells the story of her ex-husband’s new absence in her life. Although the divorce is extremely sad and should not be something that is celebrated, it does open new possibilities for her. The author likely now has more free time to do the things she enjoys such as spend time with Darlene. This also ties back to her previous statement saying she feels freed from the way she used to (and Maggie currently does) describe the first time she met Sam. I believe that including this dream was the author’s final way of telling us that she feels freed from Sam.

    1. I love yours thoughts on what her dream is about. The dream seems as though it’s the knock of her new life to come and the possibilities for what she will do next. While the divorce is sad, it also has cleared a way for her to do more of her hobbies and find time for herself.

  2. I believe that this dream, the “Nock Nock” dream, is an overview of our protagonist's current situation. She spends much of the story at home, trying to keep herself occupied and busy, though the tasks she's doing aren't necessary, or, in some cases, like her continual shopping based on her past life. To me the author is showing at the end of the dream how the protagonist is coming out of her shell and seeing that she isn't just confined to the role of a divorced mom or the girl with breast cancer this is to me most obviously shown just earlier when our protagonist accepts the role of a part time librarian its not much but taking those small opportunities gets us out of whatever current situation weave trapped ourselves in (represented in this dream by the house and pointless task) and into the bright future where we can be whoever or whatever we desire (represented by the opening of the door and having the whole world at the doorstep)
