273. Leeroy Jenkins!

 273. Tversky and Kahneman found that when it comes to money, people are less willing to take risks than they are when it comes to politics, war, or human relations. They imply that it would be wiser for people both to choose more cautious political leaders and to be more cautious in their interactions with other people.

Critics of this view might suggest that caution is not the way to affect meaningful change in the world, because fortune favors the bold.

Can you think of any "heroes," fictional or non-fictional, who are admired for their wise caution?

  1. I know this is very nerdy, but a character that comes to mind for me is Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z. He is not the strongest character in the series, but he is the smartest and most cautious. There are many times in the show when it seems Piccolo has no chance of defeating his foes. However, he always outsmarts his opponents and often aids his allies through his cautious personality and analytical skills. Because of his caution and intellect, Piccolo is admired by his allies and is one of my favorite characters.

    1. Alejandro, Piccolo was one of my absolute favorite characters from Dragon Ball Z! I think that his character is severely underrated throughout the series. He is extremely wise in battle, and proved to be a useful ally to all other characters! I agree that he isn't as physically strong as other characters, but what he lacks in physical strength, he makes up for with wisdom and caution!

  2. I am a major Star Wars nerd, and my immediate thought when pressed with this question was Grand Admiral Thrawn of the Galactic Empire. His immense military success and fame was founded in his tactical caution. He heavily relied upon patience and caution, only striking when the time was absolutely right. While many of his counterparts and certain individuals under his command did not appreciate his seemingly complacent execution of leadership, his strategies made him a feared opponent among his rebel foes. He was arguably the Empire's most successful military leader.

  3. Being a major Harry Potter fan, the first character that comes to mind is Albus Dumbledore. Throughout the series he mentors Harry and helps prepare him for whatever challenge he will inevitably have to face. Harry isn’t the only character in the series that seeks out Dumbledore’s advice, many of the professors at Hogwarts and even the minister of magic often ask for his opinion. In the series he is regarded as the wisest and most powerful wizard of the time.

  4. As a Star Wars fan, my favorite characters quickly become the Ewoks. Even with their small stature and uncanny resemblance to teddy bears, they proved to be a much stronger opponent than expected of them. Lacking in height, physical ability, and overall intimidation, these tiny beasts used their wisdom to down the enemies through setting up traps, catapulting one another, etc. Their wisdom proved to be much more effective than the strength of the larger enemies, and they looked adorable while doing it!

  5. HA NERDS!... In the masterpiece of a game that is legend of Zelda the Twilight princess
Zelda and her kingdom of Hyrule are being invaded by the twili A race of shadow beings. Her personal guard is slaughtered; she sees the lack of options she had and surrenders to Zant and the twili. Her Decision to surrender has her subjects enraged. But she Knows that it is better to admit defeat and live than to die pointlessly in the face of her enemy. Because of this decision she and her Kingdom Live, and though they are under the rule Of the twili they still have hope for a better future. In the Game, though she does not appear as much as I would like, Zelda embodies Wisdom. It is her Job to keep her people safe, But both are necessary. It was not particularly wise to leave the safety of his village Link, The Hero, Does. He does so because he is the embodiment of courage. Without the courage of Link the people of Hyrule would forever be subservient to the twili, But without the Wisdom of Zelda there would be no Hyrule to save.

  6. I know there were at least two movies and ten episodes about how horrible he was, but Khan from Star Trek was admittedly a very wise and true hero to his people. Once he learned of the genocide of his people he went slightly berserk, but otherwise he was a phenomenal example of a cautious, wise leader. He did not want his people to be harmed in the Eugenics War, so he literally stole to space to save who was left. At this point his only choice was to literally put everyone in Cryostasis. He weighed every risk accordingly and made arguably the best decision possible. Therefore I do not blame him at all when he learned of what happened to the people he had to leave and tried to kill Cpt. Kirk (who basically said they deserved it just because they were genetically enhanced). In conclusion, Khan is one of the best examples I can think of a cautious and wise "hero". Thanks.
