195. In a summary of their work, Kahneman and Tversky argue that "We often decide than an outcome is extremely unlikely or impossible, because we are unable to imagine any chain of events that could cause it to occur. The defect, often, is in our imagination" (195).
Which do you think is a bigger problem in today's society: people who struggle to imagine that our world might change significantly in the future or is undergoing such a change right now? Or people with an "overactive" imagination who too easily imagine scenarios that are unlikely or impossible?

In the circumstances of today the bigger issue is those who cannot see the significant changes occurring in our world right now. Those who over exaggerate scenarios tend to be overlooked by society and therefore are not the bigger issue. Take global warming for example, there are many scientific studies that have concluded that the process is real and happening, yet so many of the world's government officials refuse to believe that research. The man shouting from the rooftops about the incoming alien swarm holds no power to influence others, but the man in charge of running the state/city/country has all the power he needs to convince others of his standing.

I agree with what Gracie has said. Those who refuse to see the changes that are happening currently are the ones who cause the change to occur at a slower rate. Global Warming is a perfect example of this issue. Those who refuse to believe the scientific evidence will be the same ones that resist any change implemented to resolve this issue.

I think people who struggle to imagine that our world might change significantly in the future are a bigger problem to society. People who believe this way are in danger of becoming complacent with what they are doing in life, and not really worrying about how the things that they do affect the world. For example, it is estimated that around 100 million people didn't vote in the 2016 election. President Donald Trump won the election, and he is now going for another term. I think many people do not realize how important it is to vote this year, and how much the election will change everything. At this point, many people in places of power are desperate to get President Trump out of the office, because he is exposing corruption. It is extremely important for those who support Trump to get out and vote, so Trump can keep that power and put truly good American people in charge.

DeleteIn today's society, I believe that the bigger problem is people not recognizing the change that is happening right in front of us today. Our world is changing majorly right now, with all the many things taking place. I think we have people in our society that are oblivious of seeing what is taking place.

I am sure that there are people with an overactive imagination and think of things that will never happen, but I believe our problem lies in people not recognizing what is taking place now. I think people need to open their eyes and see what is happening. They need to try to make a difference, so our world can move on from where it is.

Delete195. The bigger problem with today's society in my opinion is people who struggle to imagine that our world might change significantly in the future. If members of society are closeminded to change then our society will become divided and ignorant to new and relevant information. I think optimism is good to an extent. When people have wildly unbelievable expectations it can become detrimental for society.
ReplyDeleteI believe the people that struggle to change WITH society are the bigger problem simply because they’re ignorant. There has been so much attention brought up in our society lately about these different topics/movements and there is plenty of research and factual evidence to back up everything that they stand for, and being a member of society and not being willing to accept a fellow member because of race, gender, sexuality, etc is not anything up for debate, and if someone can’t accept that society changes it can lead to a lot bigger issues such as violence or discrimination in any aspect of life. Regardless of where/what you’re doing In the workplace, when you’re grocery shopping, when you’re giving birth, when you go on an early morning jog, who you date/marry, etc, you are going to encounter people that will discriminate against you because not everybody in our society chooses to grow and change. I believe that if we all kept up with our society and were willing to change our hundreds of years old beliefs, then we would live in a much better place. The world/society IS changing right now, and nothing will stop that. The only thing we get to do now is choose which side of history we will be on. The side of the oppressor or siding with those who are oppressed and fighting so that they no longer are.

I think it is a much greater issue to have people who cannot imagine the changes that are likely to occur in front of them. I once read something that talked about people who cannot see the system are fully enveloped by the system, and while it is totally okay for people to be a part of something, I think it is truly dangerous for them to be unable to see and acknowledge the things that are happening/potentially could happen in front of them. That is where wrongs go unnoticed and many substantial injustices and ignorance take place, and that is truly a bad thing.
ReplyDeleteI believe there is a bigger issue today with people who fail or refuse to see the changes that are occurring in our world today. The world around us is rapidly changing and evolving. I think this is because of people who were once seen as overactive. Yet, there are people out there who cannot see the changes happening right in front of them.
ReplyDeleteI feel like there can be no limit to wishful thinking in progressing society. If you set impossibly high standards towards an amazing and progressive goal, even if you never make it to the end goal each step along the way leads us closer and closer to that ideal society. The lack of wishful thinking can lead to complacency which has left our current society in a rut. Although several people believe wishful thinking to be naive and impossible I am of the firm belief that we should always be striving to be a better society. The more we think that things are impossible, the more things seem impossible to us.
ReplyDeleteI think that the people who struggle to imagine change in the future are the bigger problem. Change is inevitable. Everything will change at one point or another or in one way or another. People that overimagine might get the change right. It might just be later than they thought. Those people could also just use that imagination for art for others to see. It just means that they are thinking outside the box, and I think that more people should do that. I personally have an overactive imagination. I'm always thinking what could happen, even the things that probably won’t happen.
ReplyDeleteI think that those who refuse to imagine any change possible in the future are a much bigger problem. I believe this to be a bigger issue because, in the example of global warming, individual people will not contribute to the cause because they may believe that their help is insignificant in the future. They may think that recycling one plastic bottle does nothing significant in the end. This is a similar situation with our voting system. Some people may not cast their vote because they think that their singular vote changes nothing for our future.

I think that the larger issue with society is the lack of perception of change. I believe that change needs to be perceived and embraced, as that is the quickest way to progress as a people. Whereas many people claim that people need to get their heads out of the clouds, I think that these same people are the driving force behind that change that we strive for. -Darian Shaw
ReplyDeleteI believe that, for the most part, the ones who fail to recognize the long-lasting changes currently happening. Some claim to be unaware of the problems, only to become victims to the self doubt of their ability to recognize and act on change. Let's take something discussed quite commonly, global warming. Lots of people usually only to come to think of a couple things when it comes to this subject, carbon emissions and increase in global temperature. While it is commonly discussed that carbon dioxide is produced as a by-product from factories and vehicles, the variable that causes the higher amounts of emission is not discussed very often. This variable lies in overpopulation. The more people, the more vehicles for transportation, the more incineration yards for increased waste, the higher amount of water contamination from runoff and factory by-products, etc. All these factors continue to increase as population increases, and many people refuse to support the environmental industry to limit chemical by-products and carbon emission because they either don't believe in the problems or they don't believe they can make a meaningful contribution, so they claim that said subject is not a problem.
