P5, C6, 1: "India"

Saravanan's father reports that "Tamil boys and girls have always gone away to work . . . Especially from this area. Often, they haven't come back" (258)

If you were telling someone about people in your community and what young people "always" or "often" do, what would you say (in a sentence or two)?

Only answer this question after you've read part five, chapter 6 and all preceding chapters.

  1. If I were asked about what the young people in my community often go on to do, I would say "People from here often go down one of two paths, they either move away to a different town to go to college or seek some opportunity that's not available here, or they stay and work. Often, they work at Goodyear or other trade work in the area."

  2. If I were telling someone about what the youth do in our area, I would tell them: “Many go to college, the rest figure it out. People always finds a way around here.”

  3. If I were telling someone about what the youth do from where I am from, I would say "The majority will go to college somewhere in Texas, some will go out of state, and the last few will wander." It is common to follow your parents guidance/expectations and many people go to college/choose their majors to please their parents, especially from where I am from where there is substantial parental pressure and control. This pressure often leads many to attend college, attend colleges they do not want, or have career paths that are unfulfilling.

  4. If I had to briefly tell someone what young people often or always do in our community, I would say that there’s mostly two types of people. The ones who decide to try new experiences and get uncomfortable, and the others who stay comfortable with their everyday life and don’t care to change or venture into the outside world.

  5. If I were given an opportunity to tell someone about what the youth from Weleetka do, I would say this: "They try. Some get married, some stay here, a few leave, but they all try to live with what they were given." The youth from where I am from are not all given the best start in life. Some never leave Weleetka, some leave and never return, but what we all have in common is that we are all trying to make the best of what we were given. For some, that might mean smoking every day, and for others, it means going to trade school and figuring it out from there. No matter what the outcome is, everyone here at least tries to do better, even if they don't succeed.
