P5, C5: "Death of a Friendship"

"Survival" (2022) by Achraf Baznani

According to Soni, Rajan reported that he was never motivated by principles. He was only motivated by a will to survive and to take care of himself and his family (248).

Do you think most people you know are like Rajan in this way? How common is it to find people who are deeply motivated by abstract moral principles? Would the world be better or worse off if people were more committed to abstract moral principles?

Only answer this question after you've read part five, chapter five and all of the preceding chapters.

  1. I think most people are pretty “selfish” in this way. They mostly care for bettering themselves and their family. I feel like it’s pretty rare to find people who are truly led and motivated by moral principles. I believe the world would be a lot better place if everyone based their actions off of moral principles. Most principles include thinking of how your actions could affect other people, and being selfless. I don’t think it’s necessarily wrong to be “selfish” in this way and want what’s best for them and their family. I am the same way. However, I do think the world could be a better place if we all follow some moral code of ethics.

    1. Randie, I agree that most of the world is "selfish" in this way. I also do not think it is wrong to be this way. Although the world may be a better place if everyone acted out of moral principles it could cause judgment from people who have a different definition of moral principles or disagreements because some what one person sees as a moral duty someone else may see as a violation of their own principle. I think sometimes people need to be selfish for their own good. Rajan was being selfish and doing what he thought best for his family which is perfectly fine.

  2. I think that it is very common for people to follow abstract moral principles. The problem is that there is no such thing as universal morals. Sure, most people would agree that murder and stealing are wrong, but some people still do it. People very rarely do bad things just for the sake of being evil. Most of the time there is a reason behind it. For example, a poor father who is stealing food for his family is following his own moral code. He wants to take care of his family at all costs. The most that someone can do is what they think is right. Because people do not see these reasons, they might think that these people are moralless, evil people.

  3. I would say that most people that I know more so focused on what is good for themselves rather than what is morally correct. There are very few people in the world that focus fully on what is morally acceptable and put their selfish needs aside. So yes, I would say that most people I know are like Rajan in this way. I would say that the world would be off a better place if everyone focused on what is morally right. Nobody is perfect and it is completely acceptable to focus on yourself and your own needs at times. So I think that you need to value yourself at times over morals, but not in all situations.

  4. I think we live in a world where people are motivated by what gets them ahead. I believe that, when it comes down to it, a lot of people in this day and age choose to do what is better for themselves rather than for a cause or "principle," and I get it. At the end of the day, I have to do what is best for my family to make sure we don’t get eaten in this dog-eat-dog world. However, I will say that I have surrounded myself with people who I believe put others before themselves, with the focus on their families in mind. I also consider myself one of those people who is deeply motivated by abstract morals, though that is not easy to come by. I think this world would be a little kinder if everyone thought that way.
