P4, C2: "Satyagraha"

Out of Many, One: Portraits of America's Immigrants (2022) by George W. Bush

According to Soni, President George Bush wanted to grant an amnesty to undocumented workers in the United States, but Southern Republicans defeated him.

It is easy to understand why someone would oppose an amnesty that forgives a large group of lawbreakers.

Putting your own personal views on the issue aside, why would someone like George Bush want to grant a general amnesty to undocumented workers?

Only answer this question after you have read all of part four, chapter two and all preceding chapters.

  1. George Bush was responding to a plethora of disasters and issues throughout the United States that affected documented and undocumented citizens. Saket Soni mentions the importance of hurricane Katrina as a contributing factor to the rise in undocumented workers throughout America. Many of the events in The Great Escape took place during the 2008 housing/economic crash. Among many other struggles Americans faced at the time, providing amnesty for undocumented workers would provide relief from the foreboding situation many of these people were in. It would also have allowed him to redirect manpower and resources away from fighting to arrest and deport undocumented people to fixing the rising issues throughout the country.
