Chapter 62: “An Incident with the Police”

Who is involved in the "incident with the police" referred to in the title, and what insight (truth) does it reinforce?  What does it show about Nora?

Can you think of anyone who has unknowingly played a more important role in your life than they may have realized?

  1. As a kid I spent maybe a little too much time on the internet, specifically on YouTube. I don't know any of the YouTubers personally, but parts of their personalities that they showed to the camera are reflected in my own personality. I was never trying to be them, I just like parts of their personality and it became part of my own.

  2. Leo, the kid Nora taught piano to, is the person involved in the “incident with the police.” He stole money from a store and was in possession of a concealed weapon. This interaction reinforces what Mrs Elm said, “Every time one decision is taken over another, the outcomes differ.” It showed that Nora does have an impact on those around her, so much so that she completely changed Leo’s life .

My sister has always played a very important role in my life but I don't think she realizes how much I look up to her. She doesn't realize that she was my role model growing up. -Abigayle Shropshire

  4. A boy that Nora gave piano lessons to named Leo is referenced in the chapter title. The truth the chapter reinforces is that those of us who are capable of great beauty and accomplishment are also just as capable of ugliness and destruction.

  5. The boy that Nora had previously taught piano lessons to, Leo, was caught stealing money while in possession of a hidden weapon. This event reinforces that despite what you may think of yourself, you do impact the people that you are around. Leo’s life took a turn for the worse simply because he had not been given piano lessons from Nora.

    1. I agree with how Zachary explained it. Nora impacted Leo while giving piano lessons and when he was not given this opportunity he made some bad decisions.

  6. Nora is a great example of even if you do not think you are making a difference, you are affecting the people around you. My older cousin acted as an older sister to me, and she never realized how I slyly copied everything she did.

  7. In this chapter, the particular subject of the incident with the police is Nora's piano student from her first life. This boy was set on a different path without Nora there to help set him on one that would end up improving his life, and it's just one of the many "It's A Wonderful Life" moments of realization that she has towards the end of the book. It shows that at the end of the day, and after living so many lives that she has wanted to be selfish for, her altruism is the part that matters. She is a good person, and even in a life that she felt awful about, she did make a difference, a GOOD difference. I think that in moments of self-hatred, when we regret the things we've done in our lives that harmed others, we need to look back at the things we did to help others as well. If it's a healthy balance, everything will be ok.

To answer the second part of this, I'm not sure if I could pin a specific person as a turning point in my life. There are many people that have shaped my life, in positive and negative ways, but I think I've made it clear to most of them, if not all, how much they have affected me, or I've at least tried my best to do so.

  8. It's Leo, the very same boy that Nora realized she had "saved" with music. The truth this reinforces is the fact that, abstinent as her original life was, she had made a lot of choices, small and large, that had changed the world. It illustrates that Nora's sadness was a consequence of the good she could no longer do, small and large.

To me, this person was Mrs. Weems. Mrs. Ruiz-Blanco was the first school teacher that had a profound impact on my life, but Mrs. Weems was the first one to convince me that I had a purpose. She was my Nora Seed. Although you could tell she struggled with her classrooms — always an infinitely forgiving person for an infinitely ruthless student base — she is the reason that I pursued writing. She convinced me that some way, somehow, I had a purpose to serve in life. Although I wouldn't have been a crook like Leo, I would've been a husk without teachers like her.

  9. The boy named Leo Nora had previously been giving piano lessons in her root life. It reinforced the effects Nora had on others' lives in her original life without realizing it. It is an example of the compassion and love Nora had for others and the effect on their lives she never recognized beforehand.
The man who used to give me baseball lessons impacted my life more than he likely realizes; he taught me devotion and how to develop a solid character not only on a baseball field but also throughout life itself, embracing me to always stay devoted and to do anything worth doing to the best of my ability.

  10. The title is referring to Leo, the boy that Nora gave piano lessons in her root life. In Nora's "perfect life" he is in trouble with the police after stealing. Nora then remembers that before she starting teaching Leo, he was always in trouble. It was her piano lessons that embraced his love for music, turning him away from trouble. The chapter further reinforces the idea that a choice can effect people in ways that you never expected. I think that the majority of the people in my life have played a bigger role than they know. - Matt Pittman

  11. Chapter 62

Leo is involved with the police. It shows that Nora is caring and compassionate and isn’t afraid to stick up for someone that might be in the wrong situation.

I would say that some of the youtubers I watched have played an important role in my life than they may have realized because they probably don't know who I am. “The organic chemistry tutor” basically carried me through precalc/trig, calc 1, calc 2, and physics C. There is no way I would’ve passed those classes if I wasn’t recommended his channel. “Squat university” helped me through a ton of my weightlifting injuries, primarily impingements in my hip and shoulder as well as mobility and stretches. If I didn’t watch his videos and educate myself on the basics of kinesiology, I would’ve definitely hurt myself pretty bad.

  12. The kid involved in the “police incident” is Leo, the child Nora taught piano lessons to in her real life. The truth reinforced is that your decision has an effect on other people, even though you might not realize that they do. This shows that even though Nora took her life because she felt like she wasn’t needed, if she hadn’t made the decisions in her main life that led her up to teaching piano lessons to Leo, he would’ve been a criminal. She is an important puzzle piece that fits perfectly into these other peoples’ lives, and she didn’t realize it until she saw it with her own eyes. Some people that play a huge role in my life and don’t realize it are artists like My Chemical Romance, Breaking Benjamin, Linkin Park, and groups similar to them that I grew up with that had music that I could relate to in a way and felt like they were writing those songs for me. -Sydney Moody
