Chapter 26: “Svalbard”

Abov: Svalbard, Norway

How does featuring a life where Nora is a glaciologist affect reader perspectives on her and on the novel as a whole?

What do you make of the tie Haig makes in this chapter to climate change and geological time?

  1. In this life, our opinion of Nora is flipped on its head. We are given a timeline where she listened to Mrs. Elm’s encouragement and didn’t allow the negative influence her parents provided to control how her life played out. In the other lives, Nora has been chasing regrets that she had on behalf of other people, but in this one, one of her biggest childhood dreams is fulfilled. Featuring this life gives us a true demonstration of Nora’s character without outside influence, as this life was requested with her purpose in mind. This chapter yielded a huge shift in Nora's perspective of her person and environment, allowing readers to recognize the importance of nurturing their inner child and listening to internal wishes no matter how unobtainable they might seem.
