According to Lerner and Schlechter, “84 percent of the 539 [college students] surveyed at the University of Montreal” believed they was at least one thing in their lives about which they were passionate and in which they engaged for an average of eight and half hours per week” (257). Do you think a similar survey of students at ECU would produce similar results? Do you think the percentage would be higher among Honors students? What factors do you think are likely to influence the percentage of students who engaged an average of 8.5 hours a week on something they are passionate about? Do you have a passion that has become a part of who you are (see description on page 258)?

  1. I feel that if we took a similar survey here at East Central we would get within five percent of what the University of Montreal did, or at least I hope we would! As honors students, I believe our results would be around the same as East Central as a whole! Factors that would play a part is how we all each grew up and the experiences we have had individually. I, personally, feel I have many passions! God, Life, family, friends, music, and children are a few I have found. I feel as if I find more and more passions everyday!

  2. I believe that students at ECU would respond in a similar fashion to the students at the University of Montreal. In fact, I think people in various stages of life would answer that they have something that are passionate about and work towards. I would not be surprised if Honors students had a higher percentage as they are usually in the program due to excelling at something - and that excellence rarely comes without persistent effort and passion. I think the factors that influence the amount of students who engaged in something they are passionate about are opportunity to work on it, persistence, natural affinity, and willingness to learn. I am not sure I have a passion the way the book explains it, but I would say that playing video games has become a passion of mine - a part of my identity.

  3. I think the results at ECU would be similar. I think everybody has that thing that they are passionate about and really enjoy and spend a lot of time doing. I think the percentage would be high among honors students. I think in general, honors students have a greater passion for stuff and in general care about stuff more. I think factors such as work ethic, drive, free time, and maybe some others could influence it a lot. I think passion has become apart of who I am. I am very passionate about a lot of the things I do and just in general I have a lot of passion.
