"Interior with Ida Playing the Piano" (1910) by Vilhelm Hammershoi
If you could spend three hours a day committed to deliberate practice with the goal of being great at one thing, what would that thing be? Is this something you are actually considering? Why or why not? How important is it to be develop a particular skill so that you become great at it?

It’s hard to think of just one thing to be committed to but I think I would have to pick, teaching. I have considered it but there isn’t much opportunity to spend 3 hours teaching something when I’m probably not very qualified to do that. Teaching involves every large skill that I want to develop, communication, listening, awareness of others, patience, understanding others, and more. One of my major life goals is to enter academia and be professor or Dean or even President of a university and the way into that is to develop the skills of teaching others. I would thoroughly love to spend 3 hours a day teaching and helping others learn something new and be able to make an impact on them while also bettering myself through application of all the skills I listed earlier. While I believe it is overwhelmingly important to develop a particular skill to become great at it, I also believe that it is just as important to develop every skill and be well-rounded. No one thing makes you great but it's the culmination of every skill, motivation, talent that you have that makes you the greatest you can be.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be great at writing. I feel that writing is an essential and highly valuable skill. It is not something that comes naturally to me, nor is it something that I am particularly good at. However, if I had three hours a day to focus on something, it would be writing.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to choose just one thing but if I had to, I think it would be learning a new language. I took Spanish in high school and was horrible at it. I spoke Spanish with a French accent, think at that for a second how do you even speak a foreign language with a completely opposite foreign accent. I do think it would be nice to become fluent in a foreign language since I would like to travel the world one day. Learning a new language is not something I'm considering right now but I believe it would be beneficial to me later in the future. It is important to develop your skills to become great at something, but that doesn’t mean you should falter in other areas. You should always keep on learning and developing your skills in all areas to help you be an informed and adaptable individual.
ReplyDeleteIf I could devote three hours a day to becoming great at anything, I would choose to put that time towards building my communication skills. I have always been a shy person and talking to people outside of my inner circle is sometimes stressful. However, I think it would be good for me to put myself out there more often. In the past year, I have seen so many opportunities to make connections with others pass me by because I was afraid of saying the wrong thing and making myself look stupid. If I committed myself to actively practicing communicating with others, I think it would improve my self-confidence and help me build new and existing relationships throughout my life.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be fluent in American Sign Language. As someone who has been hearing-impaired since she was very young, I’ve always felt drawn to learn how to communicate with the Deaf community. This semester I am taking my second ASL course, and while it is difficult for me to quickly learn a language, I am enjoying the process! Honestly, I think that mastering any language would be incredible! With learning languages, immersing yourself and putting in lots of effort is crucial to becoming skilled in the act. For most, including me, learning languages isn’t just an easy hobby. It is something that takes time and dedication.
ReplyDeleteI am already kind of doing this but for me it is football. I want to be the best possible and earn a starting spot. I think it is super important to develop a skill to be good at. Everyone needs to know something so they can then either apply it, or teach someone else. We can always be learning.
