233: Dream Big?

"Portrait of Napoleon on the Imperial Throne" (1806) by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres
Smarsh says that when she was in high school, her "mission in the world" was an "amorphous intention to do something 'big'" in places the women in her family had never gone (233).

Do you have hopes of doing something "big" with your life? If so, how would you define "big"?

Have you found that ambitious people your age are resented? Or that they are seen as being vain? As if they think they are better than other people?

Is dreaming "small" selling yourself short?  Or could it be a less conventional way to think of success?

  1. I have hopes of starting a school in Niger that offers food, air conditioning, and clean water, along with an education, to children and families in need. I would say, that is big. I would also say, changing the life of just one person is big. By positively influencing one persons life you could start or take part in a chain of positively that influences thousands of people, all by being kind to just one. I have found ambitious people my age are often seen as either inexperienced, and dumb, with hopes that they will never achieve, or vain, and arrogant ,again, with hopes they will never achieve. I do not believe dreaming small is selling yourself short. I believe small dreams are more easily reached and build confidence to create and achieve bigger ones.

  2. There is no such thing as a small dream. What seems small to you, could be a mountain to someone else. Everyone wants a goal-iath, or a huge seemingly unconquerable goal that they can take down. My own personal one is one day running a nonprofit clinic in my community. However, I am 18 years old, with many years of school ahead of me. In the meantime, I want to touch as many people as I can with kindness and love. I feel that whether they are seen as vain or not is irrelevant. If you thing a goal and reaching this goal could benefit at least on person (even if that person is yourself) then why not go for it. If your goal is to have a family, then love you spouse and raise your children the best you can. If you want to be rich and famous, use your power to give back.

  3. In my future I do have high hopes of doing something big. Specifically, I have high hopes of becoming a wife and mother. As for the definition of “big”, having a dream is a big thing. I find it hard to determine what dreams would be considered big, because every person is different. Each person has gone through different experiences that affect their hopes for their future. To someone else, my high hopes of having a family may seem small. However, it is big to me because of how much I value family in my life. It all depends on what the person values that will determine how big their goal or dreams are.

  4. I believe a “big” dream can be as big as you make it. For example, my big dream is to become a flight attendant while another persons “big” dream is to become a brain surgeon. Dreaming small is not selling yourself short. One must think realistically before tackling their biggest dreams. Big things often have small beginnings. A person must start at the bottom of the ladder with a small dream before beginning their journey to the top of their big dream.

  5. When I imagine the future, I always see myself having accomplished so many amazing things! I have a ton big dreams! For me, the definition of “big” regarding dreams and hopes is completely 100% up to the person making them. Who am I to tell someone their dreams are small and worthless? That’s awful. If someone says they have a big dream to do something, then that’s all I care about. It’s more important to have goals than to put limitations on what goals are appropriate and inappropriate.

  6. I believe that any goal you want to achieve is a big goal even if it is the smallest thing. My personal goal is to one day open up my own competitive cheer gym. Although, I still have three more years of school I make sure to keep my eyes on this goal and to never get distracted from it. Although this is not my only goal, I would say that this is my biggest one. Setting a small goal is in no way setting yourself short of anything. If it is a goal of yours, then go accomplish that goal. I believe that ambitious people are not seen as vain. They just have goals and they publicly want to accomplish them, which is okay to do. They are proud of their goals and accomplishments.

  7. In the future, I hope to have done something amazing. I didn't say big because I feel there's a difference between amazing and big. To me, doing something big means something out of the ordinary and something that other people are impressed by it. Now, something amazing can be something that many people do, or something that is a personal goal and won't capture other's attention. My hopes for doing something big would be playing baseball through college and having the chance to play professionally. My amazing dream would be to have a comfortable job and be able to start a family. Dreaming small isn't always bad, some people might want a perfectly normal life. Everyone's definition of success is different so it's not up to others to determine how successful a person is. It's up to the individual.

  8. I hope to do something big in my life. What it will be I do not know but, I would like it to positively effects a lot of people. I definitely big as effecting more then people you know or people you work with. I would consider positively changing one hundred random strangers lives to be big. Ambitious people can be seen as vain and receive criticism because of that. When I first decided I wanted to play college football in eight grade people laughed and showed me statistics that said I would never be a college football player. During my high school football career I set school records and colleges started to talk to me. People who laughed at my eighth grade dream got to watch as I signed to play with ECU. Dreaming small is defiantly selling your self short. If I dream to make a million dollars in a year and only get half way I still made a lot of money, but if I dream small to make fifty thousand dollars and only get half way I am now below the poverty line.

  9. I have big dreams but my big dreams may be small dreams to others and that is perfectly okay. Big dreams are individual opinions. My big dream is being able to give back to my community as a nurse practitioner. Someone else may dream to become a CEO someday. Success is dependent on the individual and should be based on your personal desires and aspirations instead of a social conform. You can be a successful farmer, or teacher, or president. All depends on you. Nobody should be shamed of their own big dream.
