219: The Boys Club

"A Banquet of the Officers of the St. George Militia Company" (1616) by Frans Hals
Smarsh reports that Betty was able to attend a small business college in Wichita, "where she learned to type, write business letters, and do general office work" because she received "a government education grant, probably federal funds for women by way of recently passed Title IX legislation" (219).

This post has 2 parts.

#1.  What is Title IX?  Learn about it from a reliable online source (not wikipedia) and paraphrase what you have learned (don't simply cut and paste). Cite your sources. Don't repeat what another commenter has contributed to this question.  If someone has answered this part of the question before you, only add something if you think the first answer was inaccurate or incomplete in some way.  You can also skip directly to question #2.

#2.  Before anyone answers this question, make sure question #1 has been answered.  Do you think the U.S. government should use taxpayer money for special programs that pay college tuition for someone whose gender is underrepresented in a certain field or do you think that is government overreach?

  1. #1. According to the U.S. Department of Education, Title IX is a portion of the Education Amendments of 1972 which outlawed discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal funding.

  2. #2: This is an extremely difficult question to answer in anything less than a lengthy essay, but I believe the answer is generally no. Payment programs such as those pursuant to Title IX are addressing the symptoms rather than the roots. The root of the issues are the sheer costs of college, and payment programs play to them rather than attempting to drive down prices. The more government money thrown into the education system, the more colleges are able to raise their prices and punish those that can;t receive federal money. As these prices go up, total government output increases, which increases tax dollar usage and perpetuates a cycle that only leads to overspending and devaluation of the US dollar. We must drive down costs rather than contributing to their sharp increase.
