  1. Okay, so I am going to argue a classic... Micheal Jackson's Man in the Mirror. He starts off the song saying "I'm going to make a change, for once in my life. It's gonna feel real good, gonna make a difference, gonna make it right," and although he is talking about opening up his eyes to the hungry children and the homeless man on the street, that is a change that he is making within himself. He turns the selfish love that has plagued him for so long into a idea of change. He says within the song, "Who am I to be blind? Pretending not to see their needs," as he has done all the times before. So as the chorus goes, he is "starting with the man in the mirror... asking him to change his ways." Although this does not directly correlate with Carol Dweck's perception of growth, as hers is more based on how you change your mindset to growth, which will in turn help you with learning and motivation etc., I feel as though Micheal Jackson's song is showing a more internal growth by opening up his mind to what he passes by and ignores everyday. So hand in hand, both Micheal Jackson's song and Carol Dweck's concept go past the idea of helping others or just helping to a certain point, I feel as though they both show how you have to change who you are on the inside before you can be a benefit to those around you.

    1. “Man in the Mirror” is probably my favorite Michael Jackson song because of how hopeful it makes me feel. I once heard a saying along the lines of “you better make sure you like yourself because that is who you will be with the longest.” People may find it vain to be focused on yourself but I think it’s necessary to a certain extent. Kind of like how you are supposed to put your oxygen mask on before anyone else in the event of a plane crash. You have to start with yourself, otherwise, it is going to be difficult to help anyone else.

I am not a huge fan of country music, however, this has always been one of the most inspiring songs for me.

In the beginning of the song, he says, "You feel like a candle in a hurricane," kind of like a person in a situation that's much bigger than them and stronger than them. He goes on to reassuring them that they "...will be alright."

"Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend till you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees, you look up
    Decide you've had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
    Then you stand"
The chorus of the song is what really reinforces Mindset. It shows a person when they're most vulnerable: when they've given it all that they've got and they're discouraged. But it also shows the push: when they've decided that they're going to do more, do better, and make it through.
This song also speaks to me on personal growth. "Every time you get up and get back into place, one more small piece of you falls into place."
When you push yourself and persevere, you find yourself much stronger and more independent. With every obstacle, you're using the debris to build yourself back up into a whole new person.
I think this song is everything that Dweck preached.

  3. So I am not going to lie, back in the day this song was definitely one of my favorites, mostly because it is a belt-out-loud ballad type and its meaning is pretty amazing. I have chosen The Climb by Miley Cyrus. I really think it goes along with Dweck and her mindsets very well. In the beginning of the song Cyrus sings "I can almost see it. That dream I'm dreaming, but there's a voice inside my head saying, you'll never reach it." In my opinion that speaks very clearly to the fixed mindset. Cyrus is saying that this dream she has is so close but she has the self doubt and doesn't think she is capable of ever reaching her dream. Throughout the chorus and the lines following she is somewhat having a change in heart and I think it attests to the fact that her mindset is changing, she sings
"There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waitin' on the other side
    It's the climb

    The struggles I'm facing
    The chances I'm taking
    Sometimes might knock me down,
    But no, I'm not breaking
    I may not know it,
    But these are the moments
That I'm gonna remember most, yeah
    Just gotta keep goin'"
To me this is a very good example of everything that Dweck writes about in her book and this song is a very powerful example of a transformation from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

  4. Despite how some people feel about him and his music, Macklemore’s songs are filled with optimism and the growth mindset. “Ten Thousand Hours” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxZPNXRT2fQ ) the lyrics almost explicitly mention some of Carol Dweck’s ideas of what defines people who have the growth mindset. In “Ten Thousand Hours” Macklemore describes the challenges he has faced to get to where he is at this point in his career, for example not signing with any label to make sure that he is able to create the music he wants to make, “Regardless of Pitchfork, cosigns I've jumped / Make sure the soundman doesn't -block the drums / Let the snare knock the air right out of your lungs / And those words be the oxygen”. He continues in the hook to mention that the “Ten thousand hours felt like ten thousand hands / Ten thousand hands, they carry me”; meaning that, while he could have taken the path of least resistance and instant gratification, he believes that all the hours he spent into working towards being the kind of musician he wanted to be made him into that successful person. This goes into what Dweck discussed about people with the growth mindset and how they believe that talent is fixed and you are either born with it or not. To continue with this Macklemore even openly says that he knew he wasn’t born with that talent, but that if he put in the time—he could reach his dreams: “stand here in front of you today all because of an idea / I could be who I wanted if I could see my potential”. He even mentions the greats in traditional arts (Escher, Basquiat, and Keith Haring) that he studied and looked up to, “The greats weren't great because at birth they could paint / The greats were great cause they paint a lot”. He notes that these people he looked up to didn’t get where they were by sheer talent, but because they put in the time to better their craft.

  5. A song that I think fits perfectly with the concepts of Mindset is “Praying” by Kesha. When I first heard this song, I literally bawled my eyes out. This song is all about not letting something negative that has happened to you take hold over your life. The song is about letting go and learning to forgive the person that hurt you. If something bad happened to you and you had more of a fixed mindset, it could be easy to let it overwhelm your life and take power over your emotions. In a growth mindset, you learn from these situations and like the song says, you pray for the people that hurt you. I just feel like this song embodies the growth mindset. It would be really hard for someone in a fixed mindset to say that they were going to pray for the person who hurt them, but if you are living with a growth mindset you could see that this is a way for you to grow as a person and a way to heal yourself from the pain.

    [Verse 1]
Well, you almost had me fooled
Told me that I was nothing without you
Oh, but after everything you've done
I can thank you for how strong I have become
    [Pre-Chorus]
’Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I'll just say this is I wish you farewell
    [Chorus]
I hope you're somewhere prayin’, prayin'
I hope your soul is changin', changin'
I hope you find your peace
    Falling on your knees, prayin'
    [Verse 2]
I'm proud of who I am
No more monsters, I can breathe again
And you said that I was done
Well, you were wrong and now the best is yet to come
'Cause I can make it on my own
    And I don't need you, I found a strength I’ve never known
    I’ll bring thunder, I'll bring rain, oh-oh
When I’m finished, they won't even know your name
    [Pre-Chorus]
You brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I'll just say this is I wish you farewell
    [Chorus]
I hope you're somewhere prayin’, prayin'
I hope your soul is changin', changin'
I hope you find your peace
    Falling on your knees, prayin'

    1. I love this song so much. I never considered it when reading this blog question, but I like the way you compared the growth mindset to that of Kesha.
