243. The Daily Show

"Coming after the daily work" (date unknown) by Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky (1868-1945)

According to Grant, "Our identities are open systems, and so are our lives. We don't have to stay tethered to old images of where we want to go or who we want to be. The simplest way to start rethinking our options is to question what we do daily" (243).

For this challenge, identify three or four things that you would like to start doing daily. Avoid the obvious.

  1. This is a deceivingly hard question. this is a hard question for me because you never really know the things or routines that would change your life. If I had to pick three things, the first one would be to actually sit down and read the news. Not just from one website. I want to see several different explanations of current events and see how different the recounts are. Start making my bed in the morning. This may seem like a simple or basic one, but I recently read a study that says making your bed in the morning can affect how you go through your day. I would also like to try and have a productive conversation with someone I disagree with.

    1. Hey Libby! I agree the question was difficult to answer. I think that reading news from different sources would be a great routine to get into. It would allow you to think for yourself on topics, because you would have seen different points of view and opinions on certain events. I really want to start making my bed every morning. I heard that it builds discipline in your life!

  2. There are many things I would like to start putting into practice. The first thing is creating a daily schedule for myself at the beginning of the day. I have found that I feel more grounded and organized if I write myself a schedule or to do list. The second thing I would activity I would like to do every day is read. I love reading but, recently, I have fallen out of the habit of reading for fun. The third and final thing I need to do daily is water my plants. I have a lot of plants and I adore them but I have a habit of neglecting them sometimes.

    1. I also want to start reading more. I would go through books like they were candy when I was younger, but with all of the reading I have to do for school it's hard to make myself sit and read more, even if it's fun! Recently I've been hoping to read for fun for an hour a day, but I think a couple of hours once a week might be a better schedule.

    2. I have the same experience. When I was younger, I used to read books in a day. Since I read books for school now, it can be hard to read for fun because I feel as though I should be reading my assigned book.

  3. I love your answer to this question! My plants recently died and it was very frustrating because I has them on a very strict watering schedule. I also like to have a more "grounded" day, as you put it. Chaos makes me nervous and panicky. I also wanted to say that honors has a book club where we read a new book almost every month! Right now we are reading a book called "The Woman Warrior" by Maxine Hong Kingston if you would like to join us! I believe our next meeting will be August 23, it should be a Sunday evening!

  4. I would like to start practicing my coding every day. I took Computer Programming 1 last semester and really enjoyed it. I’m eager to learn more and start and finish a few projects in that field. Another thing I’d like to start doing daily is cleaning and organizing around my house. I’ve got a lot of stuff that I need to go through and having an orderly work/living environment helps promote good moods and productivity. I would also like to set aside some time every day to write. I like writing stories and I’ve been doing too little of that lately.

    1. Gracie, I loved those things you want to start doing every day. Coding is a super cool thing to learn, and I really admire your drive to learn more. I feel the same way about being more clean and organized, because I need to get better at that too. It truly does change your productivity and mood. I notice that I feel better and more productive whenever I’m cleaner and more organized. I have a passion for writing as well, and I wish I made more time to do it also. Maybe I will start up again. I think it’s very beneficial to find creative outlets, and that’s something that makes me feel like a little kid again. I believe in you!

  5. There are few things that I would like to start doing regularly. Its not really something to do on a daily basis, but the first thing I would like to do is start making a schedule every week or month to keep my daily schedule in line. Id would help me to stop procrastinating as much and I could start doing other things that I want as well. The second thing that I would like to start doing every day is practicing my game programming and just regular programming. I went to a camp a couple of summers ago and I had so much fun there but when I came back, I just didn’t work on them except for, for school. The third thing that I would like to do daily would be to start reading books every night before bed.

  6. I would like to start making healthier choices for my mind and body. First, I would like to start meditating more often. I believe it’s good for the soul to set aside five minutes in our days to be mindful, as well as take a mental break. Second, I become so wrapped up in trying to be an excellent student that I set aside my basic needs. I tend to skip meals, run on few hours of sleep, etc. I am horrible at this when finals week arrives. Therefore, I plan on putting my basic needs first. Finally, I hope to become more structured as I keep adding more things to my schedule. Currently, the only form of structure I have in my routine is that I use a planner for due dates and events. I want to start planning time out of my day to accomplish certain tasks, allowing me to feel more structured, disciplined, and grounded. I find that I function better that way.

  7. I have seen this challenge going around called the 75 day hard challenge. It consists of five simple things that will help progress you to a healthier and happier lifestyle. The first is following any sort of diet. The second is have two 45 minute workouts, one having to be outside. The third and fourth, must drink the appropriate amount of water per day including no alcohol consumption. The last is you have to read 10 pages of a non-fictional book every night. Now these may not be obtainable for the rest of my life, but it will teach me healthy habits to carry with me for a long time.
