If Albert Were with Us (4.1)

If Albert Einstein were to apply to the ECU Honors Program, chapter four's epigraph might have been the first words of his response to the question "What should the goal of human life be?" Try to imagine what he might have added in support of his claim that "That from standpoint of daily life . . . there is one thing we do know: that we are here for the sake of others." What kind of logic would support that assertion?  You may be in a better position to answer this question after you have read the chapter.

  1. I believe the fact that people need social contact with others supports this assertion. Also, if we just look around, people all over the world are helping others. People have jobs that help others. A life goal majority of people have is to have children, to take care for and help them grow. If all parents did not choose to be good parents, society could be dysfunctional. Without Einstein's discoveries we would be way behind in our technology and knowledge of the world. Everything we do affects the people around us and the future societies that will follow us. Without other people, life would not have purpose and would be meaningless.

  2. I agree with Einstein that one of the main reasons we're here is for others. From the beginning of time, a human has never been able to fully support himself. We are always relying on others whether it's for care, social interaction, or problem solving. Even reproduction can't happen with just one person.
Also, doing things for other people gives a person a feeling of satisfaction. In today's culture, random acts of kindness are very popular. We as humans enjoy making other humans happy. It's rewarding to help another person. A lot of people also make decisions based on how it will affect others in their life. We are always trying to make those closest to us happy, which in turn gives us a feeling of worth.
