According to Gottscahll "Together with teams of editors, reality show writers (yes, writers) take raw footage and twist it into classic story lines. Extreme Makover, Queer Eye, The Osbournes, The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Whale Wars, Jon and Kate Plus 8--these and scores of other reality shows have hewn closely to the universal grammar of storytelling" (183).
So its true confession time: what reality shows have captivated your interest? On a scale from 1 (pure documentary) to 10 (transparently scripted), how would you rate the "reality quotient" of your favorite reality TV show?

Duck Dynasty is the only reality show I watch, and I'm not going to lie - I love it. Clearly, the show isn't completely reality. The show is far too interesting to be completely based on non-fiction. Gottschall wrote about the attraction to fiction, the use of it as an escape from the hum and drum of everyday life. The Robertson family is enjoyable, but I'd rate their show at a 6. They are who they say they are: a strong, old-fashioned Christian family from the South. They are not, however, in constant battles with lizards in the shop or brother on brother fish sales.
ReplyDeleteThis particular clip reminds me of my papa trying to work the remote on their new TV and my nonnie (grandmother) "encouraging" him. Definitely gave me a good laugh.
Like most Americans, I find my guilty pleasures to mainly be reality TV shows. Since the majority is fiction, I find it fun just to sit back and enjoy the story like I would with any other scripted show. The shows I watch range from those on TLC (which is more like people watching at the mall than actually watching a show) to game shows like Baggage and Big Brother (which are more soap opera-esque) . My favorite reality show though has to be The Voice. The Voice seems like it would gauge more towards a 1 on the scale, but after a bit of research, I found out that where The Voice leaves the viewer to believe that the contestants are only weeded out by the celebrity judges and the general audience, the actual reality of this is not so. Like American Idol, the contestants have to go through multiple rounds to actually get to the judges. Just to get onto the show, the contestants have to go to an open audition and then to a call back where they have to prepare at least three pieces, one possibly being a producers choice. Based on this information I would give the show a 6 on the scale because there are points in which the show is more like a documentary (the performances, being judged, etc.) , but the whole beginning process makes the show have a more scripted feel.

My favorite "reality" show is Dance moms. Not because of the moms, but because of the dancers. I used to take dance and, not gonna lie, I am VERY jealous of their abilities at such a young age. I know that some of the relationships are not as they seem to be, but I think the majority of the show is true to the people’s thoughts and beliefs of the dance world and their fellow members of the dance community. I would probably rate the show as a 3 on the scripted view. That being said, I am a very gullible person so…
