1.5: The Story People

Why do you think "The Story People" prevail? (You won't know who "The Story People" are until you read the first chapter.)

  1. Human beings are complex creatures: We are born with an innate desire to find happiness, no matter the cost. This happiness can take many forms including success, prosperity, longevity, importance, and wealth. While the ways of attaining these worldly goals may vary with each individual, I believe that the ultimate happiness comes to the individual who learns to balance these forms with grace. For example, even though the "Practical People" may have been more successful and productive, the "Story People" prevailed because of their ability to master various forms of happiness, including those that may have been labeled as "unproductive."

  2. I believe that the "Story People" prevailed because stories allowed them to rest in a way that sleeping couldn't. Story allows people to escape their daily struggles, thus reducing stress and building bonds within their tribe. It appears that the "Practical People" only worked and rested with no ties to one another. Additionally, due to their skills at story telling, the "Story People's" imaginations may have improved, thus helping them to overcome challenges (building housing, hunting animals, collecting water) in more creative ways - as the "Story People" progressed, the "Practical People" stayed the same.

  3. The “Story People” prevailed because they found a reason to live. Through their stories they made bonds with each other, beyond simply mating, that gave them a motivation to continue in their work. These “Story People” pushed past the monotonous tasks that simply maintained their survival to interaction that assisted them to fully experience the happiness and passions life has to offer. Also, I believe that through their stories they were constantly expanding their minds. They became open to new ideas that bleed into their various tasks, thus making new avenues as to how they accomplished these jobs. They created new ways of accomplishing their duties and eventually surpassed the “Practical People.” Ultimately, the “Story People” prevailed because they carried a passion to persevere and advanced methods to achieve their survival.

    1. I concur with Alex; the Story People found meaning in life that surpassed simply making it through the day. So much of life is determined by what drives you. Practicality drove the “Practical” tribe, whereas meaning must have drove the “Story” tribe. What is the point of collecting more than you need to eat if there is no one to brag to about your bounty? And surely parents ferociously guard children even more if they know that those are who they are passing their memories down to.

    2. I believe “story people” prevailed over the “practical people” because just how God rested on the 7 seventh day, we as humans need the opportunity to rest. Story telling also gives us as humans a chance to grow relationships with each other and we find people we relate to and can help us in time of need. I know that when I become so busy that I no longer have free time, I become burned out and no longer want to try to keep up with my crazy life and drop it all. I feel the story people understand when to work and when to play. The story people also have a chance to share their efforts of the day and what worked and what failed in efforts to accomplish the tasks of the day. This leads to more productive work time, that is if the advice is listened to anyway, so ideally more would get done faster.

  4. I question the notion that the Story People prevailed over the Logical People. Life is hardly ever written wrong or right in big black and white print. If you look at the population, you find a very diverse group of people. I speak not of diversity in physical looks or world view, but in how their brain processes and puts reason into the information around them. In fact, I think it would be difficult to find people who think with pure logic or story. I would suggest that most people are a mixture of the two, and that by varying the amount of each, you get the diversity you see in humanity. Humanity has prevailed not by using a single method, but by mixing several methods together, allowing it to adapt as situations change.

  5. The idea that the Story People triumph over the Practical People is not logical, but often the way things work is not logical. In theory, the Practical People should prevail because they use their free time in ways that should set them ahead of the Story People, but they are performing the same monotonous tasks over, and over, and over, and over, and over again. After repeating the exact same things for years on end, eventually these Practical People will wonder what the point really is. If all they do is hunt, eat, and mate, they will eventually realize that they are giving their offspring the exact same life that they had and the cycle will continue with no real purpose. I would have to agree with Alex's statement that the Story People survive because they have found a reason to live. They have found a way to use their creativity to their advantage. One way that the creative mind could be their asset is in the innovation of tools. Their minds could dream up stories and form ideas that they could test which could lead to the crucial advancements they need to overtake the Practical People.
